HOW CAN DEISGN
CARRY REGIONS WITH
RICH HISTORIES
AND TRADITIONS
INTO THE FUTURE?
Regional communities are now at a critical turning point. Declining birth rates, aging populations, and migration to urban centers erode the unique cultures and industries nurtured over centuries. Global market systems designed for efficiency and profit weaken local economic cycles, all while traditional industries face a shortage of successors. Due to depopulation, preserving the region’s architectural heritage and cultural assets for future generations becomes increasingly difficult.
Regional culture is a source of pride for communities and holds irreplaceable value. Yet, because these aspects cannot be quantified, they are often neglected, leading to the loss of regional competitiveness. Once regional cultural and industrial heritage is lost, it is nearly impossible to restore.
Meanwhile, urban areas also face issues: a declining sense of connection to place, weakened community ties, and a growing detachment from local identity. At the same time, the pressures of global environmental degradation threaten essential regional resources, including water, food, and natural ecosystems. In such circumstances, it is urgent to rethink how we build sustainable regional societies and industrial systems that maintain a balance with natural ecosystems while supporting the well-being of future generations.
