WHY
Is the character of
Shizuoka as a city
well conveyed?
WORLD THEATRE FESTIVAL SHIZUOKA is an annual performance art festival organized by Shizuoka-based SPAC (Shizuoka Performing Arts Center). In celebrating their 20th anniversary in 2019, as the branding director of ON STAGE SHIZUOKA, we were asked to rebrand the event. WORLD THEATRE FESTIVAL SHIZUOKA is a rare and exciting opportunity for the world’s most advanced theatre, dance, video, and music performers to gather together. However, even the locals were not well informed about the event. The theatre is one of the most primitive arts in human history, where its “land-like” and “human-like” attributes are important when visualizing the essence and charm of theatre. We, therefore, questioned what kind of design best presents this festival to the world.
HOW
Hack the city
with a “mask”
—the universal language
of performance.

The key visual of the “mask” symbolizes the unique relationship between the theatre and the people. Under the mask ripped like paper, are the performers of various nationalities and backgrounds, bringing to light their inner selves, expressing the essence of theatrical art. As we designed the logo, we named this event “WORLD THEATRE FESTIVAL SHIZUOKA,” as opposed to only using「ふじのくに⇄演劇祭」(Fujinokuni⇄Sekai Engekisai) that can only be understood by Japanese readers. The humanoid pattern on the left of the logo is composed of three icons: the Earth (WORLD), Flag (FESTIVAL), and Mt. Fuji (SHIZUOKA), representing elements that symbolize the festival. With visual developmental rules, it can be used in media platforms efficiently as well as in the city for local familiarity, furthermore to mark that the festival has once again arrived this year.





















Due to the global spread of the Covid-19 virus, unfortunately, the 2020 WORLD THEATRE FESTIVAL SHIZUOKA had to be canceled.However, at the initiative of Satoshi Miyagi, Artistic Director of SPAC, the online theater festival “WORLD THEATRE FESTIVAL ON THE CLOUD” will be held, which allowed everyone can enjoy the show at home. We designed the logo base on original one, which the stage above clouds.
