PROJECT

MOZILLA  FACTORY SPACE

Revolutionary open-source spatial design featured extensively in global media.

WHY

To make
a wonderful office
inexpensively possible
for everyone.

Mozilla is the world’s largest Open Source community known for its web browser “Firefox” and email software “Thunderbird.” In 2012, we were asked to design an office by Mozilla Japan, a general incorporated association that supported the promotion and development of Mozilla products in Japan. Having developed Open Source designs already through projects such as OLIVE, we wondered if we could contribute to heighten the creativity of people, by communicating the value of Open Source design, building the world’s largest office for the Open Source community.

HOW

Creating an open source
office design.

We designed the space for “Mozilla Factory Space” in Mozilla Japan’s new office. Based on the Open Source philosophy advocated by Mozilla, we developed products such as the lampshade and corner modules for desks and shelves and transparent polycarbonate panels. By configuring the OA floor with a distribution pallet, you can take out and use cables that pass through the inspection ports at various locations. When you look at the sign carefully, you can see that the words are composed of dots that re-enact a computer display. These space composition ideas are all published in Creative Commons as “Open Source Furniture.” By doing so, with these drawings and production procedures, anyone can build a low-cost functional office.

In Mozilla Factory Space, as people from engineers who develop software to children participating in workshops coexist in the same environment, partitions are used to separate environment for private work, where the further you go, a more private space would be secured.

Corner modules are made of single sheets of steel that can be made using the blueprint. These modules make up elements of the space such as desks, lights and shelves.

WILL

A world-famous office design,
now seen in countless copies.

The Mozilla Factory Space features in both national and international media, wherein 2013, it was probably the world’s most famous office, resulting in becoming a global campaign of Mozilla from Japan. “Open Source Furniture” has contributed to the Open Source community sharing viewpoints on hardwire / office design, accepted by many companies and freelancers mainly within the design and IT industries, into numerous types of spaces both in Japan and overseas. “Open Source Furniture” does not only have the concept to “purchase,” but also promote the suggestion to “create,” to contribute to enhancing peoples creativity.
