Design for the disaster.
When the disaster happens, you see the ‘truth’ behind the fiction of society.
We do not realize the fragile of the structure in the back of beautifully decorated wall
until we see the pillars burst through the broken wall.
Design could be a fiction itself sometimes.
I think it is necessary to design the ‘truth’ when to design something for disaster.
I could say it is a expression of the sincerity toward the design.
It’s a kind of the sincerity which connects beautiful surface directly to the structure in the deep layer,
or makes the visible thing speak for invisible thing, just like the nature.
I designed the a temporary house for the disaster of the earthquake in Sichuan, for contributing to the article of the Chinese magazine.
This plan may have some lack of investigations because of the limited time for designing,
but I tried to design it with sincerity.
First of all,let’s think about the necessary functions of a temporary house for the disaster.
I came to a decision that there are five necessary functions listed below.
1. Easy to build
2. Easy to carry
3. Strong structure
4. Affordable price
5. Comfortable space
For satisfying these five functions, I applied the honeycomb structure which can easily be transformed from a stick to a disk.
This structure was designed for my product ‘EN’ , the transforming potstand.
With this structure,I designed ‘Umbrella House’ which opens like an umbrella.
You may reallize the 5 functions are as same as those of umbrella.
If the rain is a kind of disaster, umbrellas are the portable minimum shelter for the disaster.
‘Umbrella House’ contains five functions like those of an umbrella.
1. Easy to build
The construction of the house completes when you just open it.
You can make the house very easily.
2. Easy to carry
When you carry this to the disaster area, the structure of it becomes a stick which is far smaller than the completed structure.
It is very easy to carry as well as stack.
3. Strong structure
Honeycomb structure is normally very flexible,but when you fasten it with a small frame, it becomes very strong structure .
4. Affordable price
We can expect the cheap prices of the house by using of the honeycomb paper material.
5. Comfortable space
The air layer between honey comb structure with inside and outside plastic sheets keeps the space comfortable
Also, you can adjust the condition of the space by choosing the place of windows wherever on the wall.
And the last of all, it should hold the sincerity of design.
You can see the beautifulness of the structure of honeycomb makes the facade itself of the house.
I carefully designed the house not as decorated design house but as the practically beautiful house for temporary living.
The design of the Umbrella house may just a console for the suffered people.
But if the beginning of design is to make a new point of view, the design is also the wisdom for living.
It’s just like to live happily under any conditions.
This is my song for cheering up which has a form of the house.
I wish the earliest recovery of the disaster area.
災害のためのデザイン
災害時に表れるのは、社会が持っている虚構の裏側にある、「本当のこと」だ。
美しく装飾された壁の裏側にある構造がいかに脆弱で表面的なものか、
破壊された壁から柱が突き出すのを見るまで、人はそれに気づくことができない。
時として、デザインはその虚構そのものになることがある。
災害時のデザインを考えるときには、先に述べた「本当のこと」をデザインする視点を持つべきである。
それはデザインに対するある種の「誠実さ」かもしれない。
表層的な見た目の美しさと、その深層にある構造や設備などがお互いを補い合い、
見える物が見えない物を代弁するような、そんな誠実さが必要だと強く感じる。
たとえば自然がそうであるように。
今回、中国の四川省で起こった震災を受けて、私は中国の雑誌のために被災者の仮設住居のデザインを試みた。
あまり時間のない中での検討だったため、不備なところもたくさんあろうとは思う。
けれど私なりに、先に述べた「誠実さ」という視点に立ってデザインを進めたつもりだ。
まず、今回のプロジェクトのための前段階として、仮設住宅に必要な性能について考えることにしよう。
仮設住宅に必要な性能は、思いつく限り以下の５つかと思われる。
１．設営が素早く行えること。
２．運搬が容易であること。
３．構造的に十分な強度があること。
４．比較的安価であること
５．快適であること
これら５つの性能を実現するために、私が以前「EN」という鍋敷きのために開発した変形するハニカム構造を応用し、
「傘のように開く仮設住宅」をデザインした。
考えてみると、先に述べた５つの性能は、「傘」に必要な性能と極めて近いことに気づく。
これは当然のことかもしれない。雨もまた災害だとすれば、「傘」は最小限の携帯用災害シェルターなのである。
この家の特徴は、まさに「傘」のように先に述べた５つの性能に忠実である。
１．設営が素早く行えること。
開くだけで構造体が完成するというシステムは、施工を極めて容易なものにするだろう。
２．運搬が容易であること。
この家の構造体は、閉じた状態では一本の棒になり、実際の容積よりもはるかに小さく、そして運びやすい姿に収納できる。
３．構造的に十分な強度があること。
通常時はフレキシブルなハニカム構造だが、僅かなフレームで固定すると極めて構造的に安定した強さを持つ。
４．比較的安価であること
耐水のペーパーハニカムの使用を想定しており、比較的安価な提供が期待できる。
５．快適であること
外側と内側を覆うビニールがハニカムの持つ空気層を挟み込むことで、内部を快適に保つことが出来る。
また、開口部の位置に自由度があるため、状況にあわせた施工が可能である。
そして最後に、誠実であること。
美しいハニカムの構造体がそのまま外観を構成する「誠実さ」が、この仮設住宅の特徴である。
非常時のためのデザインなので、あえて一切の装飾性を排除し、構造の美しさを前面に出した。
このようなデザインを見せられても、被災者にとっては気休めにしかならないかもしれない。
けれど、もし新しい視点で物事を見ることがデザインの始まりならば、災害の苦しい状況を楽しく過ごすような、生きる知恵もまたデザインなのだ。
これは仮設住宅の形をした応援歌である。現地で苦しむ被災地の一日も早い復興を祈っている。
